The Friends School of Portland building is a landmark example of sustainable, forward-thinking design. Completed in 2015, the school is the first Passive House–certified school in Maine and among the earliest in the nation. Designed to operate as a net-zero, zero–fossil-fuel facility, the 15,000-square-foot building features a tight building envelope, extensive natural light, natural ventilation, and solar energy production expected to exceed annual energy use. The design integrates seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, incorporating locally harvested wood and even accounting for the body heat of students and staff as part of its energy strategy. RS Egenstafer Construction completed the custom interior millwork throughout the building, contributing warm, durable, and finely crafted wood elements that reinforce the school’s commitment to environmental responsibility, simplicity, and long-term stewardship while supporting an exceptional learning environment for PreK–8 students.
